The friend who returns every present you give her. The aunt who already has everything. The dad who protests every time you spend money on him. The Hobby Obsessive. Has one passion, knows everything about it, and you absolutely do not. Picking the right brand of running shoe or fishing lure is a minefield where getting it wrong is worse than not trying.

The Sustainability Warrior. Doesn't want anything new produced for them. Will give you a polite lecture about packaging if you push it.

What the usual advice gets wrong

The standard gift-giving advice is to "try harder." Find the perfect candle for the Minimalist. The truly special object for the Person Who Has Everything. The deeply meaningful gesture for the Don't Spend Money person.

Sometimes this works. Most of the time it ends with a thoughtful object in a cupboard, kindly never used.

The shift is to stop thinking about the object and start thinking about the experience, or the choice. Each kind of impossible person has a version of "what they'd actually like" that doesn't involve adding more things to their life.
